The Truth About Laser Hair Removal: What 25+ Years of Experience Has Taught Us

If you have researched laser hair removal, you have probably encountered plenty of promises: permanent results, a specific number of sessions, painless treatments, or one laser that works exactly the same way for everyone.

The reality is more nuanced—and understanding that reality is one of the most important steps toward achieving the results you want.

At La Vie Spa Gardens, we believe exceptional laser hair removal begins with education. After more than 25 years in the beauty and aesthetics industry and years specializing in advanced laser treatments, one lesson continues to stand above the rest:

Successful laser hair removal is not simply about owning a powerful laser. It is about understanding the skin, understanding the hair, selecting the appropriate technology and treatment parameters, and treating consistently over time.

Here is what we believe every client should understand before beginning a laser hair removal journey.

“Successful laser hair removal is not simply about owning a powerful laser. It is about understanding the skin, understanding the hair, and treating consistently over time.”

What Actually Happens Beneath the Skin During Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal works through a process known as selective photothermolysis.

In simpler terms, the laser delivers a specific wavelength of light that is absorbed by pigment within the hair. That light energy is converted into heat, allowing structures involved in hair growth to be targeted while the surrounding skin is carefully protected.

Not every hair is equally responsive to laser treatment at the same moment.

Hair grows in cycles, and laser treatment is most effective when the hair is in an appropriate active growth stage. That is why one excellent laser treatment cannot eliminate every unwanted hair—and why a properly planned series matters.

Why Do You Need Multiple Laser Hair Removal Sessions?

This is one of the most misunderstood parts of laser hair removal.

Clients sometimes arrive for their next appointment and tell us: “I barely have any hair growing. Shouldn’t I wait longer?”

It sounds logical. But visible regrowth isn’t the only factor we consider when determining treatment timing.

Appointments are strategically spaced so we can continue encountering different hairs as they progress through their individual growth cycles.

Over the course of a well-managed series, clients may begin noticing:

  • Less overall hair

  • Slower regrowth

  • Finer or softer remaining hair

  • Fewer areas of dense growth

  • Less dependence on shaving or waxing

This progressive change is precisely why consistency matters.

Delaying appointments simply because the area temporarily looks smooth can work against the carefully planned rhythm of a treatment series.

How Many Laser Hair Removal Treatments Do You Really Need?

There is no responsible number that applies to everyone.

Your treatment needs depend on your individual biology and may be influenced by factors including:

  • Treatment area

  • Hair color and coarseness

  • Skin type

  • Hair density

  • Hormonal influences

  • Age and biological changes

  • Medications or medical conditions

  • Previous hair-removal methods

  • Consistency with the recommended treatment schedule

Some areas respond more readily than others. Hormone-sensitive areas—particularly facial hair in women—can also behave differently from areas such as the legs, underarms or bikini.

At La Vie Spa Gardens, we generally prepare clients for a treatment series rather than a magic number.

Many of our clients require approximately 7–12 treatments, followed by occasional maintenance depending on individual response, treatment area and future hormonal influences.

The goal is meaningful, long-term hair reduction.

Is Laser Hair Removal Really Permanent?

This is where language matters.

Laser hair removal is intended to produce long-term, stable hair reduction. No responsible provider can promise that your body will never produce another hair.

Hormonal changes, pregnancy, menopause, certain medical conditions, medications, aging and other biological factors can influence hair growth—even after an initial treatment series has been successfully completed.

For many clients, successful treatment means dramatically less hair, finer and more manageable remaining growth, significantly less shaving, and occasional maintenance rather than returning to the constant cycle of shaving or waxing.

Long-term reduction is the goal. Perfection is not a promise.

Why Skin Tone Changes the Way We Approach Laser Hair Removal

Modern laser technology allows us to treat a broad spectrum of skin tones—but wavelength selection matters.

At La Vie Spa Gardens, we use the Candela GentleMax Pro Plus®, a dual-wavelength laser platform that gives us access to two important technologies: the 755 nm Alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelengths.

Having both available means we don’t have to approach every client’s skin in exactly the same way.

755 nm ALEXANDRITE — typically selected for appropriate lighter skin types because of its strong interaction with melanin in the hair. 1064 nm Nd:YAG — allows darker skin types to be approached differently when greater epidermal melanin is present. No additional imagery is necessary.

Your Fitzpatrick skin type, current skin color, hair characteristics, treatment area and recent sun exposure all help determine how treatment should be approached.

The machine provides the technology. Experience and professional judgment determine how that technology is used.

Why Sun Exposure Matters

Living in Palm Beach Gardens means sunshine is part of everyday life.

Because laser energy interacts with pigment, recent tanning or significant UV exposure can change the way the skin responds to treatment and may increase the risk of unwanted skin reactions.

Depending on your skin and recent exposure, we may recommend postponing treatment rather than proceeding simply because an appointment is already on the schedule.

Protecting the skin always takes priority over keeping an appointment.

Can Darker Skin Tones Have Laser Hair Removal?

Yes—but the treatment approach matters.

Different does not mean untreatable. Greater melanin within the skin requires thoughtful wavelength selection and treatment parameters. This is one reason we value having both Alexandrite and Nd:YAG technology available through the GentleMax Pro Plus® platform.

Personalization is not an upgrade. It is part of responsible laser treatment.

What About Blonde, Gray, White or Red Hair?

Laser hair removal requires an appropriate target.

Because the technology depends on pigment within the hair absorbing laser energy, very light blonde, white, gray and certain red hairs may contain too little melanin to respond effectively.

No amount of increasing the laser setting can create pigment that isn’t present.

A consultation helps determine candidacy before someone commits to an unnecessary treatment series.

Why the Laser Matters—but Isn’t Everything

Technology absolutely matters. We chose the Candela GentleMax Pro Plus® because its dual-wavelength platform gives us the versatility to personalize treatment across a broad range of skin types and hair-removal needs.

The name on the laser does not perform your treatment. Your provider does.

Two clients treated with the same device may require very different parameters. Even the same client may require thoughtful adjustments from one appointment to the next based on skin response, hair reduction, treatment area, recent sun exposure and other individual factors.

Advanced technology matters. Experienced hands matter just as much.

“The name on the laser does not perform your treatment. Your provider does.”

What 25+ Years in Beauty and Aesthetics Has Taught Us

Perhaps the greatest lesson is that there is no universal skin, universal hair pattern or universal treatment journey.

We have seen clients respond beautifully and quickly. We have seen hormonal changes influence new growth. We have seen clients become discouraged because they still notice scattered hairs while overlooking how dramatically their overall hair growth has already changed.

And we have seen how much better the treatment journey becomes when clients understand what we are doing—and why.

Educate first. Treat thoughtfully. Stay consistent. Adjust when necessary. Never promise what biology cannot guarantee.

Laser hair removal is a partnership between technology, provider expertise and client commitment.
