SkinPen® Microneedling: What to Expect Before, During, and After Treatment

Microneedling has become one of the most recognized treatments in corrective skincare—but knowing what actually happens during the treatment can make the experience much less intimidating.

Will it hurt? How red will you be afterward? When can you return to your normal routine? And perhaps most importantly: what is microneedling actually doing to the skin?

At La Vie Spa Gardens, we perform microneedling with SkinPen® Precision, an FDA-cleared professional microneedling device.

Rather than thinking of microneedling simply as “needles in the skin,” it is more helpful to understand it as a carefully controlled treatment designed to initiate the skin’s natural remodeling response.

Here is what you can expect before, during and after your SkinPen treatment.

Microneedling isn’t about aggressively treating the skin. It is about creating a controlled stimulus and allowing the skin to do what it naturally knows how to do.

What Is SkinPen Microneedling?

SkinPen uses a sterile, single-use needle cartridge to create thousands of controlled microchannels within the treatment area.

These controlled micro-injuries initiate the skin’s natural wound-healing and remodeling process.

SkinPen Precision is FDA-cleared for improving the appearance of facial acne scars in adults aged 22 and older across all Fitzpatrick skin types, and for improving the appearance of neck wrinkles in Fitzpatrick skin types II–IV.

Precision, sterility, appropriate treatment depth and careful assessment are fundamental parts of the procedure.

What Can SkinPen Microneedling Help Improve?

One of SkinPen’s FDA-cleared uses is improving the appearance of facial acne scars. The device also has an FDA-cleared indication for improving the appearance of neck wrinkles in specified skin types.

Microneedling is also discussed more broadly in aesthetic practice as part of skin-rejuvenation strategies, but we believe it is important to distinguish those broader cosmetic conversations from the device’s specific FDA-cleared indications.

That is why treatment begins with a consultation rather than a promise.

Before Your SkinPen Treatment

Good results begin before the device ever touches the skin.

Before treatment, we review relevant health history, current skincare, medications, recent procedures and anything else that may affect candidacy or recovery.

Depending on your individual circumstances, you may be advised to temporarily modify certain active skincare products or avoid excessive sun exposure before your appointment.

Your individualized instructions may differ, so the directions provided specifically for your treatment should always take priority.

BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

  • Follow personalized pre-treatment instructions

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure

  • Tell us about relevant medications and recent treatments

  • Arrive with clean skin when instructed

  • Let us know about changes in your skin or health.

What Happens During a SkinPen Treatment?

The treatment area is first cleansed and appropriately prepared.

Depending on your treatment plan, a topical anesthetic may be used before microneedling begins to improve comfort.

During the procedure, the SkinPen device is moved systematically across the treatment area while its sterile needle cartridge creates controlled microchannels at carefully selected depths.

Treatment depth is not something we believe should simply be maximized. Different areas of the face have different anatomy and skin thickness, and treatment settings should reflect that.

More aggressive does not automatically mean more effective.

“More aggressive does not automatically mean more effective.”

Does SkinPen Microneedling Hurt?

Sensation varies by individual, treatment area and treatment depth.

When appropriate, topical numbing can be used beforehand to make the procedure more comfortable.

Clients may still notice pressure, vibration, scratching or sensitivity as the device moves across certain areas.

Rather than promising a completely painless treatment, we prefer to prepare clients realistically.

What Will My Skin Look Like Immediately Afterward?

Expect your skin to look treated.

Redness or a flushed appearance is a common response after microneedling, and the skin may feel warm, tight or sensitive.

Temporary responses can include redness, dryness, roughness, tightness, itching, peeling, discomfort or tenderness. How noticeable these effects are—and how long they last—varies from person to person.

Recovery is part of the treatment, not evidence that something has gone wrong.

The First 72 Hours Matter

The period immediately following microneedling deserves particular care.

Follow the post-treatment instructions provided specifically for your treatment. Avoid unnecessary sun exposure and activities that may excessively heat or sweat the skin during the early recovery period when instructed.

This is not the time to experiment with aggressive exfoliation or introduce a collection of new active products simply because you want to accelerate the result.

Give the skin the opportunity to recover.

THE FIRST 72 HOURS —

  • Protect the skin

  • Avoid unnecessary sun exposure

  • Avoid sweaty exercise when instructed

  • Follow post-treatment directions

  • Keep the routine simple.

When Will I See Results?

Microneedling is different from a facial that creates its entire visible effect the moment you leave the treatment room.

The treatment initiates a biological remodeling process, and that process takes time.

You may notice changes in the way the skin looks and feels as it recovers, but the broader purpose of treatment is not an overnight transformation.

Skin remodeling happens on the skin’s timeline—not ours.

Will I Need More Than One SkinPen Treatment?

Often, yes.

The appropriate number of treatments depends on what is being addressed, your skin and your individual treatment plan.

SkinPen clinical materials describe series-based treatment approaches for certain indications, but at La Vie we do not turn a study schedule into an automatic prescription for every client.

We evaluate progress rather than simply counting appointments.

Is SkinPen Appropriate for Everyone?

No aesthetic procedure is appropriate for everyone.

SkinPen has specific contraindications, warnings and precautions, and factors such as active skin conditions, infection, certain medications, wound-healing concerns and other health considerations may affect candidacy.

If treatment should be postponed—or another approach would be more appropriate—we would rather make that recommendation than treat skin simply because an appointment has been scheduled.

Knowing when not to treat is part of treating responsibly.

Why We Chose SkinPen at La Vie

There are many devices described broadly as “microneedling.”

For La Vie, choosing a professional system with established FDA clearance, sterile single-use treatment components and defined treatment protocols was important.

SkinPen gives us a controlled platform. But just as with laser technology, the device itself is only part of the treatment.

Assessment matters. Technique matters. Treatment depth matters. Aftercare matters. And understanding when the skin is—or is not—ready to be treated matters.

Our philosophy is not to do the most aggressive treatment possible. It is to do the treatment that makes sense for the skin in front of us.
